Bettas and certain gouramis are examples of this. Aggressive fish may also need to be kept with fish of a different species to avoid aggression. Aggressive fish need much more space to themselves along with more hiding places for tank mates. Peaceful fish can be a little overcrowded because they don’t mind other fish. Certain fish like goldfish and plecos create so much waste that they need more water volume to manage them even when the fish are small. You need to look up each specific species you want and compare minimum tank size with aggression compatibility and water parameters. You shouldn’t put 4 of each (or 8 or either) in a 10 gallon. You could put 8 of each in a 20 gallon together. While 6 tetras can fit in a ten gallon and be okay in terms of waste management they shouldn’t be housed in a ten gallon because they are very active and need more swimming space.Ĭorries and tetras both need 20 gallon minimum. There’s more to it than just space though.
